Welcome to the new Punashcha website.
Punashcha means "post-script" in Bengali, so it feels right that our website begins again today with a completely fresh look.
We have rebuilt it as a place where Rabindra Sangeet is heard as well as described, and where everyone in our community can find what they need, whether you are a parent looking for children's classes, an adult starting out for the first time, or a long-time student checking the next rehearsal.
You'll find pages for our Children, Adults and Individual classes, each with its own timetable and fees, and you can join in person in London or online. You can also see our upcoming events with venues and directions, and browse the gallery for photos, videos and recordings. Our Story tells Shyamali's journey in music, and Updates and Testimonials bring you school news and words from our students. If you'd like to get in touch, send an enquiry or message us on WhatsApp.
Tagore wrote in Bengali, but his songs belong to everyone. This site is fully bilingual. Use the language switch at the top of any page to read it in English or in Bengali. Our students come from many backgrounds, and we want every one of them, and every family, to feel at home here.
A heartfelt thank you to the Punashcha editors who read every page in both languages and helped make sure that each word, and each translation, was right. This site is far better for your care.
Above all, thank you to Mrs Shyamali Basu. For years she has worked tirelessly to keep the Santiniketan style of Rabindra Sangeet alive, the way of singing that Rabindranath Tagore himself shaped, and to pass it on with patience and love to new generations far from Bengal. This website exists to share that work more widely.
The website is designed and built by Trigon Media, a long-time media partner of Punashcha. Take a look around, listen to a song or two, and if something calls to you, get in touch. If you enjoy it, please share the website with your friends and family, so that Tagore's songs can reach even more people. As always, curiosity is the only requirement.
